Incontinence Supplies

At one point or another, most of us have experienced a loss of bladder control. Usually, this occurrence is remembered as one of the more embarrassing moments in our lives. Unfortunately, there are individuals who suffer with this condition on a daily basis. This condition is called urinary incontinence.

Symptoms of urinary incontinence can vary from mild leakage to uncontrollable wetting. This condition can happen to individuals of any age; however, it is most commonly seen in the elderly.

The majority of bladder control problems occur when the muscles are too active or too weak. If you lose control of your bladder when you laugh, sneeze or lift something heavy, the muscles keeping your bladder from opening are weak. This is known as stress incontinence.

If your bladder muscles become overly active, you could feel strong urges to use the bathroom even when your bladder is nearly empty. This is known as overactive bladder or urge incontinence.

Other causes of urinary incontinence are nerve damage and prostate problems.

Fecal/Bowel Incontinence

Some individuals suffer from fecal/bowel incontinence, which means they are incapable of controlling their bowel movements. This condition causes feces (stool/bowels) to unexpectedly leak from the rectum.

Accidental release of fecal matter can occassionally occur during flatulence or control of the bowel can be lost completely. Common causes of this condition include diarrhea, constipation, nerve or muscle damage.

Sometimes this problem is caused by an anal sphincter that has been weakened due to aging or damage to the rectum and/or anus nerves and muscles from giving birth.

At Total Home Medical, we have medical products available to assist in managing urinary and/or fecal/bowel incontinence issue. These products cannot cure urinary and/or fecal control problems, but will help to reduce leakage of stool and/or urine.

Absorbent products

Various products are intended to absorb any leakage. These products include specially designed pads, liners, briefs and diapers for adults. It is important to note that the urinary incontinence pads are much different from the pads that are used for a menstrual cycle. The urinary incontinence pads can hold a lot more moisture and come in a variety of sizes, materials and absorbency levels. Remember that you will need to find the absorbent product size that is tailored to the body type of the individual that will be wearing the product.
